Chinese dance fest

For a while, it seemed like it was going to be a washout. But the rain stopped just in time for a handful of talented young performers to take to the stage and put on a magnificent cultural extravaganza.
The Chinese cultural dance show was organised as part of the Esplanade in Action series of events — whereby a different artistic and cultural showcase is held every Saturday night in Penang.
It capped off last month with a colourful display of Chinese traditions, cultures and artistry.

The dance show followed on from a Malay traditional dance performance and an Indian cultural show held in previous weeks, in line with the month’s objective of focusing on a different culture each week.
This, the organisers hoped, will promote mutual understanding as well as allow people an opportunity to explore different cultures, in conjunction with the National Day.
The performers had trained hard over the past month for the night’s showcase on Aug 30, under artistic director Adeline Tan of Spring Productions & Arts Studio. She and fellow cast member Kent Tan believed that art is helpful in developing one’s social skills and confidence, as it allows them to mingle and open up to others through various activities.

Adeline said: “Some children aren’t very confident of their own abilities as they’ve never had the chance to try things out.
“But through activities like dancing, we can see that it builds up their confidence once they discover their inner talents.”
She said: “Furthermore, through mingling with other kids from different backgrounds, it also opens their eyes to their surroun-dings.”
The night’s programme included a warrior dance, the dance of happiness, a sketch on Chinese immigrants arriving in Penang, poem recital and also a drama on the Chinese zodiac.
Emcee Teoh Zi Han, 17, from Jit Sin Independent High School introduced the individual dances to the audience as well as provided one or two moments of humour.
“Tonight’s events are a showcase of my culture, so I feel proud and honoured to be here,” said Teoh.
State Tourism Development and Culture Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang encouraged more students to immerse themselves in performing arts, as Penang had ample facilities that could be utilised to hone their talents.
He said upcoming Esplanade in Action events include a lion dance performance on Saturday and a multi-ethnic drum performance on Sept 12, both starting at 8pm.
