Put on your dancing shoes Free workshops, performances and refreshments at USM

FREE dance workshops and performances will be held in conjunction with World Dance Day at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang, this Saturday.
Themed, ‘The Circle of Dance’, the workshops and performances will showcase various contemporary, modern, ethnic, classical dances and a special workshop project for people with special or different needs.

Penang Arts Link coordinator Aida Redza said World Dance Day would be held at Pelenggang Cahaya and Katasila at Pusat Pengajian Seni from 10am to 9pm.

“Our aim is to gather all dancers in one place and at one time,” she said during a demonstration for the media at USM on Sunday.

She said among the workshops were ‘Tari Orang Ulu’ by Saiful Azri from Kumpulan Seni Mutiara Pulau Pinang, Noh Theatre by Joyce Lim from Dance Factory, Tarian Joget and Zapin by Persatuan Seni Budaya Warisan Jemari Pulau Pinang, ‘Cross-creation aLIFE Workshop Project for People with Different Needs’ by Aida, Junita Batubara and Kang Hooi Kheng, ‘Abhinaya – A Day of Rasa Bharatanatyam’ by Dr Mumtaz Begum Aboo Backer from USM’s Department of Drama and Theatre and ‘Belly Dancing’ by Joo Nee from Let’s Dance Studio.
She added that the workshops would be held from 10am to 5.30pm, dance performances and demonstrations from 6.30pm to 7.30pm while the open improvisa- tion jam session would be from 8pm to 9pm.

The workshops, food and refresh- ments will be provided free to encourage more people to come together and simply dance.

She added the aim was also to create greater awareness on the importance of dancing as a means of self-expression, a form of education and self-healing.

“The last time we held such a session was way back in 2004. The workshops will also allow us to gauge the public response and decide if there is a need to conduct them annually,” she added.
